Lavender and Lunch

Lavender looks great in flower borders, herb gardens and as a low hedge or edging to a border. It also grows well in containers. It's a Mediterranean plant (in needs if not always in geographic origin) and needs lots of sun and fast draining soil. Lavender prefers poor, dry or moderately fertile soil, including chalky and alkaline soils.

Fresh and light halloumi, watermelon & mint salad makes an ideal summer lunch. You'll need 250g pack of halloumi cheese thinly sliced, flesh from 1kg chunk watermelon sliced, 200g pack fine green beans, small bunch mint finely shredded, juice of one lemon, 1 tbsp olive oil, toasted pitta breads to serve.

Heat grill to high. Lay the cheese on a baking tray in a single layer, then grill for 2 mins on each side until golden. Toss the watermelon, beans and mint together with the lemon juice and olive oil, season well, then layer on plates with the slices of halloumi. Drizzle with a little more oil if you like, and then serve with warm pittas.

A companion dog, unlike a service dog, does not work or carry out a specifically trained task to help its owner. What they do provide is companionship as a pet. Although they don’t work as such, they give their owners amazing physical and emotional health benefits, making life changing differences. They do, in their own way, save people's lives.

The owner must have a disability or disorder for the dog to be called a companion dog. GPs and other health professionals will enable an owner's qualification. These dogs bring amusement and support to a person who meets the definition of disabled or handicapped. Companion dogs are also often used to help those who suffer from depression, anxiety, and PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder). I have a friend who's an ex-soldier of many years service and his French Bulldog companion dog is a godsend because she keeps him going and provides so much of the companionship that he really needs on a day-to-day basis.

Encourage birds into your garden by providing places to nest. A nestbox is an excellent substitute for a tree hidey-hole. The species you attract will depend on the location, the type of box, and the size of the entrance hole. Tits are regularly seen hammering away at the entrance hole of a nestbox. This is probably a form of display by the male, rather than an attempt to enlarge the hole.

Later, the female will also peck vigorously: natural holes may have all the surrounding bark chipped away. This may help her to judge how soft the wood is and whether the hole will provide a safe, predator-proof home in which to raise her brood. Blue and great tits will also hammer at the inside of a box or nest hole, again perhaps as a form of display.

Many birds roost in nestboxes, especially during a cold night. These roosts are frequently communal with the birds packing together for extra warmth. The record number of birds found in one box is 61 wrens!

Budgerigars, or budgies as they are fondly known, are native small parakeets of Australia, and this is the only place where truly wild flocks can be found. In other parts of the world there may be feral flocks which originated as escapees from avaries and homes as they make very good pets. The open scrubland and grassland of Australia are the budgie’s natural habitats. The birds brighten up the skies throughout the mainland, apart from the wetter areas of the east, the far south-west, and the northern edges of the Northern Territory. They feel most at home in hot, dry areas, but never too far from water. Indeed, much of the birds’ restless, nomadic lifestyle is about chasing down the best seasonal food and water sources.

This constant pursuit of the most abundant food and water takes wild budgerigars several thousand miles each year. In times of drought they are versatile – and intelligent – enough to seek out woodland or less arid coastal areas. Grass seeds might be their favourite food, but they’re not fussy when times are hard, and will happily nibble on all manner of fruit, leaves, plants, and even invertebrates. This liberal approach to diet has often landed them in trouble with humans, when their nomadic lifestyle has brought them to fields of wheat, barley and other agricultural prairies.

In times of drought budgies gather in huge numbers at any puddle they can find, and if there's no surface water they have an invaluable trick up their feathered sleeves. They locate damp ground and wait for kangaroos to arrive, having noticed way back in their evolutionary history that a kangaroo is able to dig for water. With the arrival of humans, a second potential well-digger had arrived in the budgie’s life. This was probably the trigger for the bird’s expansion across much of Australia, following the diggers.

Keeping and breeding budgies, and developing new varieties of the bird, has been a popular hobby since the late 19th century. Budgie fanciers can now be found across the world. There is not a huge amount of genetic diversity in the budgerigar (compared with chickens and ducks, for example), and the differences between various types are largely down to colour. The pet budgie is usually larger than its wild ancestor too, with its fluffier feathers giving the impression of a bulkier head.

Many pet shops stock budgies; but you can also buy birds directly from breeders, who will know the exact age of every bird they have (which is not necessarily the case with larger pet stores). An internet search for “budgie breeders in [your chosen county or city]” is a good place to start.

Този двор в Кътина е близо до язовира, за това и клиентите бяха направили сондаж. Така водата беше налице. От нас се искаше да направим само поливна система, затревяване с тревно семе и озеленяване на този двор и градина. За другата година останаха само цветните фигури, защото клиентите не бяха направили своят избор за цветя. Но дори и цветната фигура е подготвена. Сложили сме изолационни борд - ленти и изолационен геотекстил против плевели. За да сгъстим тревата ние я поддържахме в продължение на един месец. Като през това време правехме торене с изкуствена тор и пръскане на райграс против плевели.

Предназначенията на мулча са много: - той създава собствен микроклимат, задържа влагата, контролира температурата, предпазва от плевели и има повече положителни, от колкото отрицателни черти. В този двор и градина ние направихме допълващо озеленяване, няколко цветни фигури, дренаж, алпинеум в двора, суха река, скрихме една шахта, и затревихме малка част от двора.
